- What view does Socrates have about the relationship between philosophy and death? Do you agree? Explain.
Socrates believes that when death occurs, the soul exits the body and continues to prosper from growing knowledge. He believes it is something that one shouldn't fear, and that the soul will exist alone. It is also said in the tapes that those who are purified will dwell with the gods. For me, death is a bizarre concept. I will be honest, I have a fear of dieing because throughout my life I have learned that death is never that far from you. I know people who had their lives taken too soon, and I sometimes find myself thinking of where those people are now where they could be. The thought of complete darkness after death depresses me. What if it's true that one of us dieing is the same as squashing an ant, and we just fade away into the darkness of what we don't truly know? Maybe I'm in denial, but I like being in agreement with Socrates in that the soul exits the body, and continues to grow knowledge. Although I believe that the body is what allows knowledge to flow, I hope that life doesn't just come to a complete stop after death. Purpose is what makes life so great, and I like to think that purpose has the potential to be infinite in some way.
Hi Jack,
ReplyDeleteI also hope that life doesn't come to a complete stop after death. It is scary to think about death coming out of nowhere. Also, it is very depressing to think about people you know that have passed and where they are now, I have never thought about death that way and that changes my perspective a lot.
Hello Jack,
ReplyDeleteI hope this message finds you well.
I agree with your statement that what makes life so great is the purpose and meaning that is associated with it. Socrates is described as arguing later in the "Phaedo" piece that people are able to be born due to the existence of their soul existing beforehand. Under this logic, learning is simply remembering from the past. Through this line of thinking, would it be possible that one's soul eventually becomes connected to a future body and is once again prevented from obtaining truth and knowledge?
I thank you in advance for your response.
Best,
Drew Califano
Hey Jack! I feel the same way I am totally afraid of dying and sometimes it gets in the way of me living my life to the fullest. Do you feel this way too??
